Tetyana Demchenko

Abstract— This article reflects the historical development and establishment of the bridge construction school. Highlighted is a significant contribution of eminent scientists to the development of bridge-building school. The urgent task of modern science is conducting an extensive study into the history of bridge construction. There appear many defects in constructions. Many of the constructions need strengthening and reconstruction during its use. To ensure the normal operation of bridges and long term of their service the complex of works is provided: examination, testing, assessment of capacity and reliability, maintenance, enhancement and reconstruction. Examinations and tests are conducted using modern research methods with the newest devices. Assessment of capacity and reliability in a complex of works on maintenance of buildings is particularly important. In addressing these challenges, it is necessary to extensively use modern methods of calculation, testing and experimental studies. Repairs and reconstruction should be mechanized with the use of new materials and methods of technology, providing high quality work with minimal compression of trains schedule and maximum safety of their movement. All this is achieved through the hard work of prominent scientists and engineers who contributed to the development of the bridge construction.

Key words: national school of bridge engineering, scientific design, Dmitry Zhuravskyi, Nicholas Belelyubskyy
