Technical characteristics of «Borodino» type vessels in works of V. P. Kostenko

Abstract— The article contains analysis of technical characteristics of vessels of «Borodino» type, proposed by the famous domestic marine engineer Volodydyr Polievktovych Kostenko. In his works the scientist gives quite deep and various characteristic of advantages and disadvantages of vessels of the pointed type during battle, determines battle tactics, ways to provide protection, stops at issues connected to reducing battleships’ weight and ways of increasing their speed and improving their armor protection. He highlights ways of modernizing vessels, outlines reasons of Russian defeat in battleship in Tsushima battle (1905). Also, the author points out main ways to avoid such defeats in future. V. P. Kostenko Special pays special attention to detailed characteristic of the battleship «Orel», on which for several years he worked as a marine engineer and had the possibility to get acquainted with its design, armor protection and battle tactics. Also, in the article the role of works of Volodymyr Polievktovych in further development of domestic navy is noted.
