Graduates of KPI at the origins of electroslag technologies

Oleksandr Lyuty

Abstract— Paton Electric Welding Institute is celebrating its 80 anniversary. For the first time in the world were here created the new technologies of production of high‐quality metals and alloys. Graduates of Kiev Polytechnic Institute headed by academician B. E. Paton made a great contribution to creation of innovation technologies. In 1949 B. E. Paton and G. Z. Voloshkevich developed the new process of welding metals – electroslag welding. Electroslag process was used for obtaining the welding seam of high quality. In Paton Electric Welding Institute there was created a division of electroslag re¬mel¬ting for scientific studies and introduction of the new metallurgical technologies, which were led by B. I. Medovar. It was for the first time in the world when the new branch – special electric metallurgy – was created. High quality steel in produced at the plants of Ukraine, Russian Federation, Sweden, Great Britain, USA and other countries and used in produce for nuclear power industry, shipbuilding, tanks and the like.
